What is the Winter Fuel Payment?

  • Post comments:0 Comments

The Winter Fuel Payment is a payment designed to help older people with the cost of heating their homes during winter. It is usually paid automatically once a year and does not depend on your actual heating bill.

Eligible people can receive £100 to £300.

Who qualifies?

You can generally qualify if:

  • You were born on or before 27 June 1960.
  • You usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
  • You meet the conditions during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026. The qualifying week is important because your circumstances during that week are used to determine eligibility.
Let me introduce myself…

I am your local accountant, the sole Director of the practice and my name is Sonya Jolly.

I qualified as a chartered certified accountant in 2000 and have over 20 years of general practice experience.

I have always worked with small owner-managed businesses and individuals.

I feel my approach allows me to develop lasting relationships with clients, providing them with all their accountancy and taxation needs and requirements.

I like to get to know my clients well and to take the time to learn about all areas of their businesses, resulting in more tailored taxation and financial advice.

I want to offer my service as a Micro-Financial Director within small owner managed businesses within the North-West.

You may not think you can afford such a service but it is easily affordable when this means that you can use your time more effectively.

Do what you do best and let me concentrate on the financial and administrative side.

How much could you receive?

The amount depends on:

  • Your age.
  • Whether you live alone or with another eligible person.
  • Whether certain means-tested benefits are in payment.
  • Your household circumstances.

The government states that payments for winter 2026 to 2027 range between £100 and £300.

Do you need to claim?

Most people do not need to make a claim. The payment is usually made automatically if you are eligible. The government normally sends a letter in October or November explaining:

  • Whether you qualify.
  • How much you will receive.
  • When it will be paid.

When is the money paid?

Most eligible people receive their payment during:

  • November 2026, or
  • December 2026.

The money is normally paid directly into the bank account used for your pension or benefits.

The £35,000 income rule

One of the most significant recent changes is the income threshold.

If your individual taxable income exceeds £35,000 per year, HMRC will recover the Winter Fuel Payment through the tax system. Your partner’s income is not taken into account when assessing this threshold.

For example:

  • Pensioner A has income of £28,000 → keeps the payment.
  • Pensioner B has income of £42,000 → receives the payment but HMRC later recovers it through taxation.

If you live in a care home

You may still qualify if you live in a care home. However, there are situations where eligibility is excluded, particularly where certain benefits are being received and the person has been living in a care home for a specified period.

Situations that can affect eligibility

WFP2606

According to GOV.UK, you may not be eligible if during the qualifying period you:

  • Usually live outside England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
  • Were receiving free hospital treatment for the entire qualifying period and the previous corresponding period.
  • Were in prison for the entire qualifying week.
  • Are subject to immigration conditions that prevent access to public funds.

Other help with heating costs

The Winter Fuel Payment is not the only scheme available. You may also be eligible for:

Warm Home Discount

A discount of £150 on electricity bills for eligible households, including many pensioners receiving Pension Credit.

Cold Weather Payment

Available to people receiving certain benefits when temperatures remain at or below 0°C for seven consecutive days in their area.

Local council support

Some local authorities operate hardship or cost-of-living schemes that can help with fuel costs.
